What is an Ecological Impact Assessment?

An Ecological Impact Assessment (EcIA) is a structured evaluation of the likely ecological effects of a development, following the published CIEEM guidelines. It identifies important ecological features, assesses impacts, and sets out mitigation, compensation and enhancement.

EcIA is typically used for larger or more complex schemes, or where protected sites, habitats or species are affected. Our ecologists produce clear, robust EcIA reports that stand up to scrutiny from your Local Planning Authority and consultees.

The EcIA process
  1. 1
Scoping Identifying the ecological features and effects to assess
  2. 2
Baseline surveys Desk study and field surveys of habitats and species
  3. 3
Impact assessment Evaluating effects before and after mitigation
  4. 4
Reporting A structured EcIA to support your application

Why you need an EcIA

An EcIA is expected where a development could have significant ecological effects, particularly on designated sites, priority habitats or protected species.

Larger schemes

Complex developments

EcIA is used where effects are more significant or complex than a PEA can address, particularly for larger sites, or where a planning authority or their consultees have requested it.

Robust evidence

Stands up to scrutiny

A structured, guidelines-based assessment gives your LPA and consultees the evidence they need to determine the application.

A clear route

Mitigation & enhancement

It sets out how impacts will be avoided, mitigated or compensated, and how gains will be delivered.

EcIA FAQs

What is the difference between a PEA and an EcIA?

A PEA is a proportionate first assessment suitable for most developments; an EcIA is a fuller, structured assessment for larger or more complex schemes, produced once the necessary surveys are complete.

When do I need an EcIA?

Where a development could significantly affect designated sites, priority habitats or protected species, or where the LPA or a consultee requests one.

What guidelines do you follow?

We follow the CIEEM Guidelines for Ecological Impact Assessment, the industry standard in the UK.

How long does an EcIA take?

This can vary depending on the surveys required and their seasonal constraints. We will agree a programme with you at the outset.
