What is a Habitat Management & Monitoring Plan?

A Habitat Management and Monitoring Plan (HMMP) sets out how the habitats retained, created or enhanced on a development site will be managed and monitored over the long term, typically 30 years, to secure and demonstrate Biodiversity Net Gain.

Our ecologists prepare clear, practical HMMPs that satisfy your Local Planning Authority and give landowners and management companies a workable schedule of prescriptions, timings and monitoring milestones.

Why you need an HMMP

If the planning authority deems BNG enhancements to be 'significant' as part of a planning application, an HMMP is typically required to discharge the relevant planning condition.

Planning condition

Required by the LPA

Where BNG or habitat creation applies, an HMMP is typically secured as a planning condition or obligation.

Secures BNG

Protects your net gain

The plan demonstrates how the required biodiversity uplift will be achieved and maintained over the monitoring period.

Clear responsibilities

A defined schedule

It gives landowners and management companies a defined schedule of works and reporting.
